The sexual process itself is nearly an alien process to a human. Male sperm in the squid is produced in the testis and stored in a sac, and as the squid takes his place above the female, a special arm is prepped to harness and deliver the sperm. Enticing flourishes and body language continue as this occurs. The manner by which the male squid wields his arm and arrives at the buccal cavity where the female stores her eggs is of special curiosity. The modified reproductive tentacle of the squid often is grotesquely large, depending on squid type. This arm, called the hectocotylus, reaches into the sac and grabs spermatophores, which are heavily dense packages of sperm. The tentacle then operates as a huge syringe that can be indiscriminate in where it thrusts, not only injecting into the female's mantle and buccal cavity but also sometimes the arms and head. Scaled squids actually harbor two hooks which they literally stab into the females during mating for the sake of stability.
